Minecraft

Download and install Minecraft from here. You will need a Microsoft account. The conversion process from old Mojang accounts is now closed, so if you didn't convert it, you missed the boat!

Forge and Launcher

You need one of the various launchers to manage the appropriate Forge installation and other settings. I recommend this lightweight launcher called MultiMC.

In MultiMC, create a new instance, edit the instance and set the Minecraft version to 1.20.1 and Forge to 47.2.0 (there's an Install Forge button on the right side of the instance configuration screen). And finally the Settings button at the top of the main MultiMC windows has a Java setting to point to your Java 17 location.

Mods

If using MultiMC, simply click the "Minecraft Folder" button, open the mods folder, and drag and drop the JAR files from the ZIP file provided in the link at the bottom of this page.

Texture Pack (Optional)

Only psycopaths play Minecraft with the vanilla textures. My go-to is PureBDCraft. Make sure to click the MC1.20 version link. Use the slider to select which texture resolution you want. I would not recommend 256x unless you are on top of your video processing game. 128x seems to run well enough on my mid-range Nvidia card. 64x is probably a good choice if you want to play it even safer than that with the framerates.

You don't need to unzip this, and can drop the entire ZIP file into the /resourcepacks folder. In Minecraft, click: Options... > Resource Packs... > Open Resource Folder.

Mod Spotlight

Well, there's a lot of the usual magic, nuclear reactors, and emus. Here's some highlights of old and new things:

Tech and Magic

This is the portion of the modpack that will be most familiar to those that have played with me before. Largely dictated by the various tech mods direwolf20 has included in his kitchen sink packs, this more or less includes the usual tried-and-true mods for power and magic-based advancements. Immersive Engineering, Mekanism, Applied Energistics 2, and RFTools are some of the mainstays.

Magic mods Botania and Ars Nouveau are included once again.

Ad Astra returns for more space exploration. Blood Magic also returns for questionable magic practices! Speaking of questionable magic, a new mod EvilCraft has been added! What's in it? I don't know!

Notable omissions are Tinkers' Construct (the charred-brick smelting tanks) and Actually Additions (the OG mining drills, and crafting-by-lasers) which unfortunately do not have 1.20.1 support at the moment. Immersive Engineering and other included mods do have methods for smelting, though. Astral Sorcery - a popular magic mod - unfortunately does not have 1.20.1 support. Cyclic has a bug in the latest versions and has been excluded for now.

Biomes and Dimensions

Terralith is an overworld mod generator that creates some amazing biomes. I didn't include any other overworld biome mods, really, because this one alone seems to do the job.

The YUNG's series of mods brings improvements to nether forts, strongholds, ocean monuments, and more!

Incendium and Nullscape make the nether and end more interesting - using only vanilla blocks!

New this time is the Deeper Dark dimension mod! Where will it take you? Who knows?

Food and Farming

Continuing to ditch Pam's Harvestcraft pack in favor of some smaller, less-bloated mods. These include Croptopia, Farmer's Delight, and a few more.

The Nutritional Balance mod makes eating a bit more interesting as it gives bonuses for eating a variety of foods.

Monsters and Creatures

Ice and Fire promises big dragons and stuff. So watch out!

Alex's Mobs continues to turn the entire map into a $#%&ing zoo which everyone enjoys!

Infernal Mobs supposedly creates some more challenging enemies here and there, so watch out for those.

Modpack Philosophy

I like cool tech mods, but I also like a challenge. I try to balance out the godlike powers we get from tech/magic mods with other mods that add more challenging terrain and monsters. This makes early game survival a bit more harsh, but that just makes it more rewarding to upgrade your gear and fortify your base! It also provides more challenging enemies to fight when you do have more powerful gear. Becoming too powerful too early is boring!

I also try to limit overpowered utilities where I can. For example, I don't particularly like mods that auto-harvest entire trees when breaking one block, or things that make obtaining rare materials trivial. It takes the fun away from progression and automation which are the things that make modded Minecraft fun, in my opinion. Similarly, I don't like things that make traversal too easy. I've tweaked the waystones configuration to make teleportation cost much more XP than the default. My reasoning for this is that it encourages exploration and building - if you can just teleport for free anyway, it takes away the feeling of exploration and the motivation to forge a path from one place to the next.

Issues

As mentioned in the server rules section, RFTools dimensions can be buggy and cause server issues so use with caution, and ask for a server backup before creating a new dimension.

There's a recipe conflict that prevents the chisel from being crafted (conflict with a knife recipe). Just ask for one if needed and I can hax one in.
