Hello Welcome to Adelias :O
1/31/2024 - We Are Secure
The site is now properly HTTPS/TLS enabled - a plan enacted to keep up with shady competitors such as Toran Inc. Their technology has always been inferior, and we are in no way merely "catching up" - rather, we are blasting off light years into the future of computing. Despite any nonsensical ramblings from Toran mouthpieces, this plan to excel Adelias into the future of security has been in the works for months, so I don't know what they're talking about.
1/12/2024 - It's 1998
There's a navigation bar, now. Magically it's floating over there thanks to float: left - the hero that saved us from HTML frames long ago. There was a moment of helplessness, after years of letting the Java machine power my web-based intentions, where I wondered how a website is brought to life. I've done this before, I think? But HTML was a lifeless, static thing that didn't behave like a complex application - not like Java Servlets. There's a certain lifelessness I'm not used to - no back-end to weave your pages together and sprinkle them - dynamically, even - with bits of data here and some widgets there to conjure up a living, breathing page. No, web development feels cold again with just HTML. But that's okay - I know there's warmth and life to be had, somewhere. I just need to remember it's 2024 and people have created things to solve just this dilemma.
The last time I got really into HTML development, we decided it was XML. I was exicited. My fastidious nature gorged on it. Closing tags neatly and orderly was fun. Then we changed our minds and decided no one actually cares about XML that much. So HTML5 went back to the old ways, except now with a bunch of really cool shit, and an admission that marquee was a mistake that never should have been. And, of course, while all of this was happening, a world of technology emerged to make web development not feel so lifeless and static. Node.js, Bootstrap, Django, etc. The problem with picking up on a thing years or even decades after you last used them is convincing your brain that it's not 1998 anymore and there's probably better ways of doing things than what it knows. So, I look forward to learning some modern solutions to making this website look and function not as bad as it does right now.
Meanwhile, 2024 is perhaps setting itself up to be the year of TTRPG as we have both 13th Age and Cypher System campaigns soon to be underway. Please look forward to it!
11/22/2023 - Fundamentals
I've always had a respect for fundamentals. My marching band teacher gave a lasting impression to me with his reminder that even on grand finals day we will start by doing basic drills. In fighting games, matches are often won not by fancy tech but by good fundamentals. This week, at the risk of biting off more than I can chew again, I am diving into fundamentals of Debian/Linux, C++, Python, HTML5/CSS3, and perhaps any other dusty skill I remember from long ago. I'll try not to spend -too- much time, though - after all, I'm not a beginner but a seasoned computer scientist (I guess).
I will make it a goal to add to or improve this webpage every time I post something. I like the idea of it slowly morphing into something visually presentable.
11/20/23
I am reading a bit more on Debian administration and just brushing up on Linux in general. I would like to post more things here - I should probably add some kind of blogging service to my list of things to set up. But for now, the good old days of writing HTML files with vim.
I also want to get back into development at home. I miss it, honestly. I would like to catch up on C++ again. Maybe more of that soon.
Finally, I need to make this a portal (ugh I hate that work has made me think of using that word) for all things related to my 13th Age activities. Maybe this can be a convenient site for players of our upcoming campaign.
